What To Do After a Car Crash

Hibu Websites • January 20, 2022

Being involved in an accident can be scary and stressful. There are almost 6.75 million car accidents in the U.S. alone each year, according to Statista. Are you wondering what to do after an accident? From visiting an auto body repair shop for estimates to taking pictures to file a report with the insurance company, read on to learn what to do after a car crash.

You've Been in an Accident: What Happens Next?

There are several steps to take after a car crash, starting with safely pulling over to the side of the road and calling 911. Be sure to take pictures of both cars and the scene of the accident for the insurance company if possible.

Exchange information. Exchange information with the other driver. This includes the full name and contact information, insurance company, policy number, and details about the car and damages. The police report will have this information as well, but it's good to make sure to get it for yourself.

Contact roadside assistance. If there's too much damage and the vehicle is unsafe to drive, contact roadside assistance to have a tow truck pick up the vehicle to bring it to an auto body repair shop.

See a doctor. If you or anyone else was injured in the accident, even if it's nothing life-threatening, make an appointment with your doctor. Sometimes injuries don't show up right away, and you may feel sore the next day. Save any documents and receipts for the insurance.

File a claim. Once you've returned home, file a report with the insurance company. Give as many details as possible and send them any photos that were taken. Having as much information as possible, along with the police report, will make the process much easier.

Visit an auto body repair shop. If your vehicle wasn't towed, visit your local auto body repair center to have a trained professional inspect your vehicle for any damages and to estimate the cost of any repairs. This paperwork will go to both insurance companies, with the at-fault driver's insurance covering the costs of the damages in most cases.

Being in an accident is never easy, but these tips will help make the process go as smoothly as possible. Be proactive with the insurance company and make sure everything gets fixed promptly and is covered by the at-fault driver. When it comes time to fix any damages, give us a call!
